The Spirituality of Children
Spirituality has been around for at least 70,000 years, but religions have only been in existence for 5000 years.
Dr. Nita Penfold, co-developer and founder of Spirit Play, curricula used here and elsewhere in UU congregations, will explore the basic need in humans for spirituality and how we are born as searching creative beings. "Children have the same need to answer the big questions of existence as adults do," says Dr. Penfold, “but how should these questions be approached?” Nita Penfold received her Doctorate of Ministry from Matthew Fox’s Wisdom University in California and has served three UU churches as Director of Religious Education and 8 years as Director of Spirit Play. She has led almost a hundred Spirit Play trainings and teaches as adjunct faculty at Andover Newton Theological School in the Worship and Theology Arts Department.

Music during Worship
On August 1st we hear Cathy McManus singing music that speaks to parenting. We hear a version of the traditional The Little Horses adapted by Aaron Copland. She will also sing American Lullaby, and a Stephen Sondheim song from “Sweeny Todd”, Green Finch and Linnet Bird. This last piece is a commentary on caged birds that sing. Would they rather fly? Do they sing instead of flying? Do our children develop their wings and fly or do they remain in shelter.

The Annual Gospel Services ~ A Tribute to the King of Gospel
The Reverend James Cleveland was the catalyst for creating the modern style of gospel music. He brought traditional gospel songs into mix with bluesy vocals, jazz harmonics, funk, and R&B arrangements for church choirs. His music influence left a lasting contribution to American music in and outside the church. Join the choir under the direction of Marie Flowers as she and our minister stir the morning in song and inspiration. Ross Hoppe is guest pianist.

Louisiana Lullabye
A lullaby is a cradle- song, a lulling song to help a child go to sleep. Sometimes we need to be comforted. Sometimes we need to be stirred into consciousness. With eyes on the Gulf of Mexico, we reflect upon our lives only five years ago when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita rumbled through our region and the levees broke. We gather in worship on this anniversary weekend with Heart Voice Trio
(Helen Hoffpauir, Marie Flowers, Cathy McManus) and our minister
