As part of the church's ongoing Hurricane Relief & Social Justice Project,
the "Weekend Warriors" of the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge are a dedicated
group of volunteers who travel to New Orleans once a month to aid Unitarians in the rebuilding effort. Through their hundreds of work hours since the group's formation in the fall of 2005, they have assisted New Orleans-area Unitarians clean and gut their homes, repair structures and fences, remove debris and perform yard clean-up. The group is led by Michael Hebert, who can be contacted at (225) 931-6270, michael_hebert@urscorp.com.

Call for December Volunteers!!
We have three more Saturdays this year to work on getting Augusta in her house in Violet, (St. Bernard Parish) by Christmas. All the drywall is up, with Augusta putting in the last screws.
I was able to take a look at Celia's door and window leak problem, and pick up a TRAILER FULL of recyclables at the FUUNO, as well as meeting a group of volunteers from a Massachusetts UU church.
I'm guessing that the plan is (anybody with corrections/updates, please let me know!) to:
For the kitchen, master bedroom and closet, bathroom and washroom:
1. finish taping, floating and sanding in these rooms
2. prime and paint the walls and ceilings. Painting gurus, how long does the primer have to dry before the first coat of finish paint is applied? Second coat?
3. install all the electrical outlets, switches and light fixtures. Jim is working on this and may need some help, may work during the week
4. install the cabinetry in the kitchen and bathroom
5. install flooring and trim

News From The Nov. 18, 2006, Work Day: The weather was fantastic to work in! Thanks to Caitlin Wells, our Episcopal Diocese group leader, and our UCBR members, Al Babbit, David Earle, Irene Kato, Jeff Flynn, Nancy Gilbert, Sylvia Martinez, Mike Hebert and "Magan," an Episcopalian who worked with us to gut the bottom four feet of drywall, trim, cabinets and flooring in a house in the lower 9th ward. Thanks to Sylvia's blankets, we had a picnic lunch on the front yard. We had a Unitarian-style "multiplication of loaves and fishes," when we shared our food with Nancy, who forgot her packed lunch at home. We contributed about 64 hours of our labor to this effort this weekend, working along-side "Nettie," a working single mother of two children, who flew in from N. Carolina where she and her children were evacuated to, to work on her house. She said we made her Thanksgiving. Mike Hebert returned the lawn mower that Jim Casper repaired for Augusta Butler. The intergenerational Thanksgiving service Sunday morning just capped it off. From the service (I'm STILL singing it!): Let us give thanks for the food that we share. Let us give thanks for people who care. Food fills the body, and love makes us whole. Let us give thanks, deep down in our soul.
