Teach me to pray? Anyone can recite or memorize a prayer, but teaching gratitude is something different. The attitude of gratitude is very different from the attitude of entitlement. Life, you owe me. You owe me happiness. You owe me justice. You owe me attention and vindication.

That Newsweek cover story (11/10) on religion and science is fascinating. The National Institute of Health threw out many studies purporting benefits of religion, citing faulty methodologies etc. but one solid study revealed a correlation of church attendance and longevity.

As of press time we are still lacking $90,000 to make our budget for 2004. The officers of your church continue to be hopeful that those who have not yet pledged will do so this Sunday. See a member of the Canvass Team (who will be in the church office after services) and sign your pledge card.

I hope you can attend the book discussion that Rabbi Zamek and I are leading, first here at church, then at Beth Shalom, on Nov. 5 and 12, respectively. The author of Reverence: A Forgotten Virtue, will be keynoter at the Prayer Breakfast on Friday, Oct. 31, 7AM at the First United Methodist Church. Stay after church services to see the short film El dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) scheduled for showing after each worship service this Sunday, November 2nd.

Do things tend to come together or fall apart? That's a question of physics, philosophy and how hydrated I am before I start out on a morning run. Religion, too, plays a roll in answering the question. Since I can't fix people and can't change them, I take a certain pleasure in fixing things.
